- GENERAL INFORMATION
Changes for 2012 in RED font
- Open Class pickups may be certified at any organization pull. Certification costs $5 per certification.
- One vehicle will be allowed to pull only once per class. (Two Individuals cannot run the same vehicle in a single class.)
- Any major infraction will cause loss of eligibility for a year and 10 days.
- Engine and/or drive train protest will be a $100 protest fee, if engine and/or drive train are found to be illegal, fee will be refunded. If engine and/or drive train are found to be legal, protest fee will be given to the owner of vehicle protested.
- Weight protest fee will be $25.
- Driver must wear helmet and fire suit. RRVPA recommends each driver to wear a neck brace. A fire extinguisher must be on board and easily accessible by driver. Contestant must be a minimum of sixteen years of age and have a valid driver's license.
- Vehicle must have rear bumper or nerf bars that contact sled before any body or hitch parts.
- No stock pickup may pull in any modified class.
- MODIFIED (OPEN) FWD RULES
Changes for 2012 in RED font
- NTPA rules apply for this class.
Exception: 650 CID naturally aspirated max.
Engine will be pumped and certified. If seal is broken you must be re-pumped.
- Minimum class size is five (5) units. If less than five (5) (open qualified) trucks register then super-stock trucks may jump to fill the class. Jumping is based on top place(s) in super stock class and they pull first.
Bar tires required on SS trucks that jump to Open.
- SUPER STOCK FWD TRUCKS
Changes for 2012 in RED font

- Vehicle must be 4 wheel drive and maintain a somewhat stock appearance. It also must have been mass produced in any given year.
- Any transmission or reverser allowed with after market transfer cases. Clutches may vary but must be enclosed in an explosion proof bell housing (must be SFI approved).
An automatic transmission must be enclosed in scatter blanket or external shield (SFI approved).
Drive shaft between transmission (reverser) and transfer case must be fully enclosed with either 3/8 inch aluminum or 5/16 inch steel.
- Must have all safety equipment such as 3 drive shaft loops per drive shaft with a minimum of 3/8 inch aluminum or 5/16 inch steel loops enclosed 360 degrees, not more than 2" from shaft in any direction. U-joints must be enclosed 360 degrees and shielding to extend 4" from center line of u-joint and be fastened with 3/8 or larger bolts, grade 5 bolts accepted. Must have shielding on drive axle hub bolts. Neutral safety switch and reverse light are required. Reverse light to be within 18" of point of hook. Kill switch must be located within 24" from point of hook and may be six inches off center.
- Any combinations of front end and rear end may be used. Must have front
working brakes.
- Front axle must remain in same location as stock vehicle. Rear end cannot exceed plus or minus 2" of wheel well with a maximum wheelbase of 133" and must be fastened rigid to the frame. The outside edge or narrow axle tire must overlap center line of tire on wide axle by 1".
- Hitch to be a maximum of 26" in height to be measured at point of hook. Must be rigid in all directions. Drawbar must not exceed 25 degree angle. If adjustable link is mounted to rear axle, the point of mount must be mounted at center line of rear axle or below. Hitch length to be minimum of 30% of vehicle wheel base measured from center line of rear axle to the point of hook. Hitching device to be 3 3/4" long and 3" wide.
- Weight class to be 6200 lbs. Weights may not exceed 60" in front of vehicle measured from centerline of front axle to outermost part of weight and must be securely fastened. Weight bar must have supporting wheels and be no more than 6" off the ground and within 6" of the front of weight bar.
- Engine and frame must be of the same manufacturer as the truck.
- Engine must remain in stock location and must be cast block (aluminum heads are optional) with a single four-barrel carburetor, which has working floats and mechanical linkage. Fuel injection is not permitted. Cubic inch limit to be a maximum of 530 cu. Inches.
Engine will be pumped and certified. If seal is broken you must be re-pumped.
- Non-Oxygenated Race Fuel or Gasoline only. Illegal fuels: E-85, all forms of nitro methane (Including nitrous oxide & propylene or alcohol as a fuel or fuel additive for pulling.)
Fuel may be either alcohol or gasoline. Nitrous oxide is not permitted.
- No paddle (bar) tires allowed. Tires must be DOT approved with a Maximum of 35" inches tall by 12.5 inches wide mounted on 16.5 Inch rims.
- Minimum class size is five (5) units. If less than five (5) (super-stock) trucks register then pro-stock trucks may jump to fill the class. Jumping is based on top place(s) in Pro-Stock class and they pull first.
Pro-Stock trucks that jump do not have to meet the SS truck requirements.
PRO STOCK FWD
Changes for 2012 in RED font
- Weight
- Class is 6200# with driver. No part of the weight bar or weight may extend more than 60 Inches from center of front axle. No mounting of batteries, fuel cell or hydraulic unit on front of weight bar.
- Weight bar must have 2 supporting wheels at least 6 inches in diameter, no more than 6 inches from the ground and with in 6 inches from the front of weight bar.
- Engine
- Engine must be in stock location. Engine size is 480 cubic inches with +/- 2% for pump accuracy. Engine block and heads must be cast iron. Must have OEM casting numbers. Engine must match make of vehicle.
Engine will be pumped and certified. If seal is broken you must be re-pumped.
- One carb of a 4150 flange only with working floats. No fuel injection, air compressing devices, sheet metal intakes or stretched carbs, naturally aspirated only.
- Exhaust must discharge down under the vehicle and must exit toward the rear of the vehicle, no side discharge permitted. No Vertical Headers allowed.
- Radiator of standard size in stock location, engine must flow water.
- Fuel. Gasoline only. Illegal fuels: E-85, all forms of nitro methane (Including nitrous oxide & propylene or alcohol as a fuel or fuel additive for pulling.)
- Fuel tank or fuel cell must be securely mounted in box of pulling vehicle. (Not in cab)
- Batteries must be securely mounted behind grill or in box. (NOT IN CAB)
- Body
- Truck body must be a full-sized production truck body. No mid-size or compact bodies allowed.
- No fiberglass bodies or parts. (Fiberglass hoods and hood scoops allowed.) Anything coming thru the hood must be covered by hood scoop.
- Must retain full: factory outer fenders, (Inner fenders or scatter shields must be in place, if the top of engine block can be seen you must have scatter shields.)cab, steel dash, OEM glass and complete box. No body cutting except to clear tires on front fenders. No body hulling for the purpose of reduction of weight. NO Flat beds.
- All interior maybe removed provided it can be unbolted or unscrewed. Must retain a full steel dash frame.
- Box must have a complete floor, OEM or like material and thickness. (NO aluminum or plastic) Must use either 3/4 inch wood or 18 gauge steel.
- Tailgates are optional.
- Chassis
- OEM frame, must have been an option on 1 ton or less. Maximum wheel base 135 inches.
- OEM transmission and transfer case 1 ton or less. Must match make of manufacturer.
- Front axle must be of Dana 60 specs with 70 outers or less.
- Rear axle must be of Dana 80 specs or less.
- No after-market axle housings.
- Axles must be mounted +/- 2 inches from center of wheel wells.
- Front axle must be of OEM design and in stock location.
- Rear suspension must be on springs. Any number or configurations allowed. No blocks, tie downs, or welded shackles.
- Must have 4 wheel working brakes.
- D.O.T. tires of maximum size 35"x12.5" on any size rim.
no more than 16.5" rims. NO cutting, grooving, or grinding allowed. (Sipping is permitted.)
- Must have front and rear bumpers. Bump stops qualify for rear bumpers.
Bump stops must contact skid before hitch. Maximum height of bump stop is 36 inches.
- Must have OEM steering box. Electric/hydraulic steering pump is allowed.
- Hitch to be a maximum of 26" in height to be measured at point of hook. Must be rigid in all directions. Drawbar must not exceed 25 degree angle.
If adjustable link is mounted to rear axle, the point of mount must be mounted at center line of rear axle or below. Hitch length to be minimum of 30% of vehicle wheel base measured from center line of rear axle the point of hook. Hitching device to be 3 3/4" long and 3" wide. Hitch must be below the truck bed.
- Safety
- Must wear Helmet, seatbelt, and fire suit. (Jacket and Pants.)
RRVPA recommends each driver to wear a neck brace.
- Must have all safety equipment such as drive shaft loops, U-joints enclosures, working kill switch, working back up and brake lights, explosion proof bell housing or scatter blanket, and fire extinguisher. .
- One Closer for every U-joint, and one loop per shaft.
Recommended 1/4 inch steel or 3/8 inch Aluminum.
- Closers are 360 degree shields that extend 2 inches both ways from center
of U-joints.
TWD Trucks
Changes for 2012 in RED font
- Vehicles in this division will adhere to all pertinent criteria of modified tractor safety, construction and operation, unless special variations are noted.
- Main battery disconnects not required
- Weight class 6200lb
- Body/Chassis
- The maximum length of the vehicle is no more than 15 feet from centerline of rear axle to forward most portion of the vehicle including weight racks.
- The 15-foot from center of rear axle overall rule will apply to all TWD vehicles with the exception of a 10-inch over-length allowance for cosmetic fiberglass only. No steel structure, re-enforcement or steel bumpers allowed past 15 feet. Tow hook to be consistent with 15-foot rule.
Note: This allowance applies only to pickup truck style bodies of the following models:
1994 or newer Dodge
1996 or newer Ford
1998 or newer Chevy/GMC
- Must run a minimum of 14 inch rims with an automotive or front tractor tire.
- Any wheelbase is permitted
- Front wheel and axle to remain in the visual center of the front wheel well. Maintain minimum of 2 inches of complete original type wheelhouse forward front of wheel. Must be able to see forward most part and rearward most part of tire from a side view.
- Maximum width of vehicle is 8 feet.
- Weights are not to extend forward of maximum length state in Rule 3a above, nor rearward more than 12 inches from hitch point and must not interfere with hitching and unhitching of vehicle.
- Any factory production body truck or van is allowed, including passenger type bodies.
- Funny car-type body and/or fiberglass body must have escape hatch or doors in top or back of body.
- Vehicle must have a presentable van/pickup bed with cover or flatbed in place.
- Chassis (frame) may be truck frame or fabricated similar to Modified tractors.
- Vehicle must have hood, grill, fenders in place as intended by manufacturer.
- Vehicle body style must be or have been available from a dealer as mass produced.
- Vehicle must maintain original appearance.
- Vehicle appearance:
- Fiberglass hood scoops, spoilers, fender flares are allowed.
- Allowed to use stock appearing pickup truck and van fiberglass bodies and body parts.
- Driver must be in original driver compartment.
- Side doors must be mounted and closed if vehicle was manufactured with doors.
- Vehicle doors must have a single hatch design, allowing the door to be opened from both inside and outside.
- Flip-top-body type vehicles that do not have two working doors must have door glass lowered or removed while under green flag.
- Vehicles with less than stock size window openings must have an escape hatch with a minimum size of 17 inches x 18 inches, or large enough for driver to exit.
Note: Escape hatch will not be counted as a working door.
- All TWD vehicles must have a presentable front windshield of glass, plexiglass(acrylic), or lexan (polycarbonate). Factory-tinted glass acceptable. Stained or smoked glass not allowed. Tinted windows that impair track official's view of drivers compartment not allowed.
- Vehicles in this division must have vertical bumpers at the rearmost point of the vehicle. Bottom bumper to be a minimum of 24 inches from the ground. Bumper to extend minimum of 8 inches vertically. Must be rigid.
- Driveline/Clutch
Note: Engine to clutch to transmission to be constructed as Modified tractor:
- Torque converters, automatic shifts, etc. are permitted
- No electronic, pneumatic or hydraulic device that effects the clutch system, allowed. All staged or variable released clutches of any description prohibited.
(This does not effect slave cylinder for clutch pedal.)
- Driveline Shielding
- Without planetary rear end
If planetary rear end is not used, transmission to final drive must be like FWD trucks.
- Vehicle must have three round metal loops shielding on each drive shaft. (two-piece drive shaft must have six metal loops.)
- 360 degree loop must be a minimum of 3/8-inch aluminum or 5/16" steel, 3/4" wide (or wider) and not more than 2 inches from the shaft in any direction.
- Drive shafts between engine and transmission must have solid shielding a minimum of 3/8" aluminum or 5/16" steel.
- Vehicle must have 360 degree metal shield around u-joints, 3/8" aluminum or 5/16" steel, minimum width 6 inches.
- Axle and hub bolt shield required, except where planetary final drives are used.
- Shield must be at least 0.060 inch thick
- Minimum diameter of axle end or hub bolts to be covered on both front and
rear axles.
- Mounting shield may not be mounted to axle end or hub bolts.
- A hole may be installed in center of front shield so lock can be operated, so long as hub end or axle bolts are covered.
- No counter balancers permitted in driveline.
- With planetary rear end:
If planetary rear end is used, transmission to final drive must use Modified tractor shielding.
- All remaining drive train, excluding additional manual transmissions, must be enclosed in minimum 5/16" steel or 3/8" aluminum, round, inside diameter not to exceed 2 inches more than the outside diameter of the largest universal joint, fastened every 6 inches or closer, with 3/8" or larger bolts (grade #5), or butt and seam welded, and securely mounted to vehicles frame. Applies to all vehicles with exposed drive shaft. No more than 1/4" of end of driveline shall be visible with driveline shielding in place.
Note: If U-joints are used in any drive shaft application, the shielding must be 5/16" steel or 3/8" aluminum with 1/8" steel insert in aluminum. The insert must be a minimum of 6 inches wide.
- All TWD vehicles engine/automatic transmission combinations must have either of the following:
- Two front engine mounts, two rear engine mounts, and a support saddle for rear of transmission, with 1/2" maximum clearance.
- Two front engine mounts, support saddle at rear of engine, with 1/2" clearance, and a mount at rear of transmission.
- TWD vehicles with a drive shaft of 60 inches or longer must have a minimum 2" nylon strap in the middle of that span to secure the drive shaft shield to the frame.
- Engine/Engine Limitations
- Vehicles are limited to a single automotive-type engine.
- Automobile engine is any engine or its replica available in a passenger car. Maximum (8) cylinders. A replica to be considered legal must accept and swing a stock crankshaft. No diesel engines permitted.
- At all levels of TWD competition- a limit of 575 cu. In. and two valves
per cylinder.
Engine will be pumped and certified. If seal is broken you must be re-pumped.
- Engines may be supercharged or turbo-charged or nitrous injected.
Nitrous injection allowed on natural aspirated engines only
- SFI blower restraints required on all super charged engines.
- Engine must be in stock location, which is defined at being within engine compartment as manufactured, behind stock grill and in front of stock firewall.
- Vehicle may run without radiator, and engine may be moved forward, but engine must stay behind the grill.
"Entire engine" to mean anything that is bolted to the engine block.
- Except for high performance type starters with crank shaft drive, rear of engine block may not be moved forward of center line of front axle.
- Allow only single staged turbochargers in this division and must therefore follow safety rules that apply to all turbo-charged engines, which are found in General Rules.
- Competitor must disable one ignition system by means of other than a switch: I.e. removal of spark plug wires on either end or removal of the distributor for that system.
- Fuel injection ( and carburetors) and headers may protrude through the hood.
Note: Bubble or scoop is optional, but if used, the scoop or bubble must cover the carburetor (s) of fuel injection, if induction system protrudes through the hood.
- Vehicle must have vertical exiting exhaust. Height of pipe must be a minimum of one foot above the bend.
"Vertical" is defined as being plumb, with a 10-degree variance in any direction permitted.
- Vehicles to conform to provisions of Modified tractor engine shielding.
- Frame
- Vehicle must have floor or bed cover.
- Vehicle may compete without tailgate or rear door (s) for greater hook point visibility.
- No portion of vehicle may interfere with sled, chain or hook during pull or while being hooked or unhooked.
- An area 5 inches wide and 12 inches high immediately above and below the drawbar must be free of all obstructions (including weights, wheelie bars, and second draw bars) for ease of hooking and unhooking.
- If body extends more than 12 inches behind point of hook, the open area must be 18 inches above draw bar and 24 inches wide at rear most point of body.
- Vehicle must have tow hitch on front of vehicle.
- It may extend no more than 6 inches ahead of the farthermost front portion of the vehicle.
- It will not be counted when measuring length of vehicle.
- It must have a 3" diameter hole, positioned horizontally.
- It must be strong enough to push or pull the vehicle at its heaviest weight.
- It is to be used only for pushing or pulling the vehicle.
- Safety
- Vehicle must have a complete firewall with no holes except for controls. Holes not to exceed 1/2" larger than control.
- Vehicles that do not have working doors must carry an onboard halon fire system with a minimum of three nozzles located within the driver's compartment/ engine compartment.
- Flip-top or funny car type vehicles must have body in lowered position before vehicle hooking to sled.
- Flip-top type bodies must have a safety lock to hold up the body.
- Operators Compartment:
- No radiator, heat exchanger and/or water hoses allowed inside operator compartment.
- If battery is inside operator's compartment, it must be safely enclosed and securely fastened.
- No fuel tanks, fuel pressure gauges, fuel pumps and/or fuel lines inside operator's compartment.
- If the fuel tank is located behind the driver, a fire barrier is required from the firewall to the rear of the driver's at. (0.060 inch aluminum or steel is acceptable fire barrier material.)
- Tires
- The rear tire diameter shall not exceed 143" circumference when mounted on an 18-inch rim and inflated to 28 psi. The ground patch is not to exceed 19 inches on original tread.
